Registration is officially open for the 2022 Northern Michigan Startup Week, scheduled for May 9-15. This week of events is organized collaboratively by a variety of “local startup and tech ecosystem leaders,” and will celebrate entrepreneurship and innovation in Traverse City through a variety of panels, pitch competitions, informational sessions, and more. Most Northern Michigan Startup Week events are free and open to the public.

Crain’s Detroit Business: Retail incubator Hatch to become part of TechTown Detroit

Two Detroit organizations with a focus on further catalyzing small business development efforts in the area are joining forces. Hatch Detroit, a retail and restaurant incubator initiative, will now be housed within TechTown Detroit, a Midtown neighborhood-based small business support organization affiliated with Wayne State University, according to a news release.

How VSBDR can help: Some of the needs, especially when it comes to small businesses on the technical assistance side, is help with financial statements. So we know that with the pandemic a lot of businesses, when it came to applying for assistance, whether that was relief grants or other kinds of relief loans, a lot of that required a lot of financial documents. Especially when we talk about small businesses of color, it didn’t necessarily have all of those documents. And so they missed out on a lot of the relief funding because they didn’t necessarily have all the paperwork in order.

Verizon has actively partnered with Michigan small businesses. We are members of numerous chambers of commerce and associations from across the state that work with small businesses (such as the Detroit Regional Chamber, Grand Rapids Chamber, Dearborn Chamber, The Right Place, MI Chamber, Automation Alley, Metro Detroit Black Business Alliance, MI Business Incubator Assoc.). Verizon participates in a number of thought leadership events with these organizations to share expertise and resources with their membership.

Detroit News: RMC raises $1.35M for local charities; 82,500 more Detroit homes have internet access

The 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic raised more than $1.35 million for local charities, the title sponsor of Detroit’s PGA Tour stop announced Thursday morning.

Of that total, $805,000 was designated for the tournament’s Changing the Course initiative, which aims to end Detroit’s digital divided by 2025. When the initiative launched in 2020, about 40% of Detroit households had access to the internet; today, with the help of Changing the Course and the federal Affordable Connectivity Program, that number is 67.5%.
