CES 2020

A little late, but here’s a quick #ces recap:

Went to stay informed on all the latest trends (or buzz)…

3 key takeaways:

While I didn’t attend in 2019, the 2020 conference could be dubbed “the year of 5G”. The buzz surrounding 5G on the conference and exhibition hall floors was palpable and significant portions of both the free and paid content included 5G topics. Is this “peak buzz” (think blockchain in 2018) or has 5G transitioned into the mainstream technology discourse? Or both?

Programming demonstrated the breadth and potential of 5G. Robotics, gaming, healthcare, agriculture, etc. showcased unique panels focusing on how 5G will impact individual sectors. Concrete examples = a powerful education tool.

Both startups & big corporations are forcefully advocating for 5G. On the exhibit floor, startups, mostly in the IoT space, gathered in a separate 5G labeled section while the big and familiar corporations (Verizon, Nokia, AT&T, Intel) were heavily represented across the official programming. It’s interesting when both early-stage companies and legacy enterprises are driving the discourse for a frontier technology. It makes experimentation, pilots, and investment easier if leading corporations start the process as willing agents of change.
