Silicon Valley Business Journal: State of Venture 2020: Dollars, Deals and Unicorn Births in Silicon Valley

Last year was a banner year for unicorns — venture-backed companies that have hit a valuation mark of at least $1 billion. The United States had 28 new unicorns in the fourth quarter and 225 total unicorns at the end of 2020, both of which are historical records, according to PwC/CB Insights’ latest MoneyTree report.

Bay Area companies joining the top 5 list of most valuable unicorns include Stripe, which was valued at $36 billion at the end of 2020, Instacart at $18 billion and Chime at $18 billion. All three companies are headquartered in San Francisco.
