Digital or manual? Bluetooth or GPS? Centralized or decentralized? Such are the efforts to monitor the spread of the coronavirus, known as contact tracing, that are being carried out in the United States through different approaches to the use of technology and individual freedoms.

Some of the country’s governors have refused to launch digital tracking programs and have instead hired thousands of human contact trackers to locate people who have been close to an individual with COVID-19.
