On March 19, California became the first state to go into lockdown to slow the spread of COVID-19. Much of the rest of the country soon followed, but nearly three months later, coronavirus cases are still rising in several US states.

As cases were spiking in the United States in April, Apple and Google announced an ambitious partnership: The longtime rivals would work together to create Bluetooth contact-tracing technology that public-health authorities could use to track the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.
